| Resumo | An experiment, made during the austral Summer of 1990-91, by Projecty MEDICA (Measurement of the Antartic Current), in the Brazilian Antartic Program (PROANTAR), is reviewed. The objective of this report is to evaluate the surface layer circulation in the Bransfield Strait, using surface temperature and salinity data from 23 hydrographic stations and trajectories from three satellite tracked drifting buoys. The mean velocities for the three trajectories were computed in component form, through the use of linear regression and then put into resultant vector form. Temperature and salinity data were obtained from an analogically recording, self-contained STD (salinity, temperature, depth)instrument. The temperature (T)and salinity (S)traces were first digitized, then corrected by T and S measurements from Nansen bottles. These corrected surface T and S values were plotted and grouped on a T-S scatter diagram, in order to locate the principal water classes present. The mean currents during the January-February period varied considerably within the Strait. Along the west side of the Bransfield, the current indicated by buoy Audrey was 38 cm/s toward 052 deg. Somewhat to the east, the track of buoy Vilma showed the current to flow toward 073 degrees at 6 cm/s. In the central part of the Strait buoy Fatima moved at a mean velocity of 6 cm/s in the direction 143 deg. Audrey's trajectory on the west side of the Strait appeared to be only slightly affected by vortices or the presence of fronts. Buoy Vilma's track was generally to the NE until the final part when the track reversed itself, indicating the presence of a current flowing into the area. The trajectory for Fatima indicated a low frequency oscillatory flow associated with the penetration and interaction of regional waters into the locale. |
